Why Use A Serum?

If you are serious about skincare, serums are not an optional extra. Many people ask me if serums are really necessary if they already use a good moisturiser. My answer – absolutely! I like to think of serums as the secret weapon in one’s skincare arsenal.

Although almost weightless, serums are very powerful! Designed to be quickly absorbed into the skin, serums effectively deliver essential phyto-nutrients. Unlike moisturisers, whose main task is to form a protective barrier on the skin, serums target specific skin concerns and work directly to eradicate them.

Serums are developed to be lightweight, sometimes it even feels as if you are applying water, so no heaviness, oiliness or residue. Even on oily or acne-prone skin, you will not experience clogging of the pores and subsequent breakouts. Despite the light texture, serums are packed full of potent ingredients that go to work directly on your epidermis achieving spectacular results.

There are a number of serums on the market and it can be confusing to know which is best for you. I advise my clients to identify their skin concern and choose a serum that targets the specific issue. For example, Kalahari’s Phyto-Bright Serum is recommended for hyper-pigmentation and our Instant Lifting Serum for anti-ageing concerns.

If you do not have a specific skin condition, then an all-rounder serum is the way to go. Tackle dehydration and dull skin with our Radiance Day Serum, fortified with concentrated extracts of Kigelia Africana, Cucumber and Rooibos Tea. Daily use of this antioxidant-rich serum will ensure ongoing rejuvenation and optimal hydration of your skin.

If you are serious about your skin, you seriously should consider a serum!

Health Tea
Enjoy the rare taste of organic red bush tea from Kalahari. A beauty tea that promotes a healthy body and skin because of a high level of antioxidants that has many beneficial effects. You can do more than just drink it.
Use it if you suffer from different skin conditions – it relieves inflammation and itching. Apply the tea directly on the skin if you suffer from eczema, acne and psoriasis or use it as cold compresses over puffy eyes.
You can enjoy the tea before bedtime since it is caffeine-free and has a calming effect.
TIP: Add a tablespoon of rooibos leaves to your bath water – or foot/hand soak. The tea leaves your skin calm and refreshed.

Get Hands On

My Day starts the Night Before
The Jewish people start their day at 6pm and I think they are on to something! I like to plan my day the night before. That way I can think through everything that needs to be done and get it clear in my own mind.

Write it Down
I am an avid list maker. Part of my daily preparation is a detailed to-do list. I also ensure that I prioritize that list so that it actually gets done! Nothing worse than a to-do list that never ends.

Do the Hard things first
Michael Hyatt talks about slaying dragons before breakfast and I love the imagery. Do your most difficult task first. The thing that is bugging you, the thing you are worrying about, get it done first thing. That way, you do not have to spend energy worrying about it. And you always have more energy in the morning!

Delegate, delegate, delegate
I know this is a difficult one to do. Especially for all the perfectionists out there. But remember, great leaders grow others. That includes letting others make mistakes, fail and try again. Tasks that I absolutely do not have to do, are delegated. I believe in the team around me and have confidence that they can achieve greatness.

Outsource personal chores
I am an international businesswoman and I have a family with a home to run and chores to do. There is no shame in outsourcing small jobs. Create employment, manage your energy and live wisely!

Say NO
This is a big one. We are stewards of our own lives and our own time. Time, once given, can never be relived. So make every moment count. Do not spend time doing something that you actually should not, or do not want to be doing. Many people struggle to say no because we are concerned about what others may think of us. Fear of man is a dangerous trap, don’t fall into it!

Set a Time Limit for Meetings
Meetings are important, but it is more important to have a well run, productive meeting. Staff meetings should never exceed an hour. I ensure that I am always well prepared and expect the same of my employees. Stick to the facts and deal with the issues. If one person needs to discuss something further, set a separate time for that.

Online Rules
Let’s face it, we can all get overwhelmed by that inbox. I set specific times to answer email each day and have trained myself not to constantly keep checking back. Personal social media is a NO NO during work hours – just say NO!

Capture Ideas
I am always having ideas. Big ideas, small ideas, wild ideas, bad ideas – but it is important to capture them all. I carry a small notebook around with me to write down my ideas as I have them. I also take photos and notes on my phone to remind myself of beautiful things I have seen and experienced and want to remember. That way, when it comes time to plan new ventures, all my ideas are already on hand.

Life-long learning
The world around us is evolving so fast. New technologies are arriving almost every day. We have access to a plethora of teachings, books, webinars and seminars. I am always reading a collection of books across a wide range of topics. I make a point of learning at least one new thing each day. It keeps you humble and teachable… and that is something we all need!

You are Beautiful and Loved…

Women are nurturers. We are wired to care for and love those closest to us. We are givers. Constantly giving to our husbands, our children, our bosses, our work mates and even the beggar on the street. But we are notoriously bad at giving to ourselves.

For many women, taking an hour for themselves to get a pedicure results in feelings of guilt and wasted time. How many times have you heard your friends say, “I’m just too busy for that.” Are we really too busy or have we bought into the lie that we are not worth the time and the effort?

If we do not take time to look after ourselves – body, soul and spirit – we will run out of steam sooner rather than later. The best way to serve those around you is to ensure that you are getting what YOU need first. That is why, on those dreaded airplane safety talks, they insist that you put your own oxygen mask on before helping others. We will have nothing to give if we have not made time to receive something for ourselves first.

So today, take some time for you. Walk through the mall, meet a friend for coffee, read a magazine, get a massage or just take 10 minutes to sit quietly in your garden enjoying nature. You are worth it. You are beautiful and loved…
